The Avant-Gardians

The Avant-Gardians draw on a collectively diverse range of musical idioms, resulting in performances that are fresh, engaging, sometimes weird, and always uniquely beautiful.  The Avant-Gardians’ music, rooted in collective improvisation, includes interpretations of graphic scores, text scores, and classic avant-garde literature. The following recordings feature Brian Stark (saxophones), Drew Farrar (guitar), Jon Small (bass and electronics), and John Sergel (drums).

Solo Vibraphone

The vibraphone is a fascinating instrument to explore in a solo context, where no harmonic subtleties of the bars are lost.  The vibraphone is the perfect solo instrument for live music in low-volume venues.

Matthew Miller Trio

Supported by only bass and drums, this group is the perfect showcase for the vibraphone. These soothing, unobtrusive textures are well-suited to dining music, while the harmonic material explored makes the trio equally at home in the context of a concert. Audiences are always intrigued by the rarity of the instrument and find it fascinating to watch. These recordings feature Wesley Morgan (bass) and Gustavo Cortinas (drums).
